Brave Rugby was inspired by the story Brave Like a Buffalo by Mellisa Allen and Jadyn Fischer-McNab. The buffalo is an important symbol in many Indigenous communities, and our name and logo honour these teachings.

In the story, a storm approaches, and the smallest buffalo becomes scared. Instead of running away, the mother buffalo teaches that the brave choice is to face the storm and move through it. When the storm passes, she reminds the young buffalo that challenges don’t disappear when we run from them—being brave and facing them helps us get through them faster. Throughout life, storms will come, and the buffalo teaches us to meet them with courage.

This teaching is at the core of Brave Rugby.

The buffalo reminds us to:

  • Be brave even when we feel afraid

  • Stay strong during challenges

  • Face obstacles with courage and purpose

  • Support one another like a herd

  • Show respect to everyone

  • Treat others the way we want to be treated

Brave Rugby is more than a team name—it’s a mindset and a way of moving through the world. Like the buffalo, we face challenges with bravery, unity, and respect.

We will share training dates, camps, and program information as they become available.
